Most suppliers treat MWIR lamps like lightbulbs. They ask for your wattage and length, ship you a tube, and call it a day. But here’s the thing: a lamp isn’t just a part. It’s about how much heat actually hits your workpiece.
The nitty-gritty of the physics
MWIR lamps live in that 2.0 to 4.0 micron wavelength range. If you’re working with glass or certain polymers, that’s the sweet spot for absorption. Now, voltage and wattage determine your heat density. If you cram a high-wattage tube into a tiny footprint, you get intense energy. That sounds great, until you realize it puts a massive strain on your power supply. If your wiring can’t handle that current draw, you’re going to fry your connectors. Simple as that.
Quartz, coatings, and the “fit”
We stick with high-purity quartz because it can take a beating from thermal shock. Sometimes, though, a plain tube isn’t enough. We use coatings to shift the emission spectrum or protect the filament. It changes the way heat sinks into the material. Instead of scorching the surface, the heat reaches the core where it’s actually needed. As for the connectors—usually R7s or Sk15—they’re easy drop-in replacements. But they have to be tight. A loose connection isn’t just a nuisance; it creates a hot spot that can literally melt your socket.
Why we need to get our hands dirty
You can’t optimize a glass heating line by staring at a catalog. Every oven is different. The airflow is different. The way heat bounces around is different. That’s why we prefer to come to you. We need to see where the heat is actually landing. We map the thermal profile to hunt down those annoying cold spots. If your lamps are in the wrong spot, you end up with uneven curing or stressed glass. We play around with the focal distance and the angle until it matches your line speed. It’s always a balancing act. Crank up the intensity and you’ll speed up your cycle time, but you risk overheating the edges. We figure out that balance on your shop floor, not from a desk in our office.
