If you’ve ever worked with glass, you know the nightmare of internal stress. One wrong move with the temperature and crack—there goes your hard work. Traditional kilns are great, but they’re slow. If you’re running a continuous line, you can’t just stop everything and wait for a giant oven to catch up. That’s why we lean on shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. They hit the target temperature in seconds. Not minutes. Seconds. It means you can move straight from forming to annealing without killing your momentum.
How the heat actually works
Here’s the thing about IR: it doesn’t bother heating up the air around the glass first. It just goes straight for the material. Because the energy transfers directly, you get a rapid heat-up cycle. This is what makes “online” annealing actually work. You can keep a steady temperature gradient as your pieces move down the conveyor, so the glass settles in comfortably without the shock of a sudden temperature jump.
The gritty details
To get enough heat for high-volume production, you’ll need high-wattage quartz elements. Just a heads-up: these things pull a lot of power. We usually set them up with high-voltage configurations so we aren’t fighting massive current draws across long banks of heaters. But there’s a catch. This kind of concentrated heat is brutal on your reflectors. If your reflectors get dirty or pitted, your efficiency tanks and your lamps won’t last nearly as long. Plus, you’ll get hotspots, which can warp your art. Keep the optics clean. It’s a simple chore, but it saves you a lot of heartache.

The best part? These lamps are basically drop-in replacements for your old heating elements. We use standard connectors, so the wiring is pretty painless. And since they react almost instantly, you can tie them right into a PID controller with a thermocouple. It creates a tight little loop.
