
Stop the Chipping: Why We Preheat Glass with Infrared
Ever notice how glass just loves to flake or chip right at the edge the second you try to cut it? It’s a pain. Those tiny micro-cracks and “corner breakouts” happen because the glass is fighting you—there’s too much internal stress in the sheet. That’s why we use infrared (IR) preheating. It basically calms the material down before the blade even touches it. How it actually works Here’s the thing: glass is terrible at moving heat around. When it’s cold, it’s brittle. If you hit it with a mechanical shock, it reacts violently. By hitting the surface with short-wave infrared radiation, we can warm it up fast. This doesn’t melt the glass—far from it. It just relaxes those molecular bonds and eases the tension. When the cut happens, the crack follows a straight line instead of wandering off and taking a chunk of the edge with it. Why go with IR lamps? We stick with quartz halogen IR lamps because they pack a ton of heat into a tiny space. Unlike a big oven that wastes time heating up all the air in the room, IR lamps beam energy directly into the glass. It’s nearly instant. If you’ve got high-wattage short-wave lamps, you’ll hit your target temperature in seconds. Your production line keeps moving, and nobody is standing around waiting for a heater to warm up. The tricky part Now, you can’t just crank the heat and walk away. If you run the lamps too hot, you’re just trading one problem for another. Too much heat creates new thermal stresses, and suddenly your glass is breaking spontaneously. You have to find that sweet spot between how far away the lamps are and how long the glass stays under them. And don’t ignore your cooling. Those high-power arrays throw off a massive amount of heat. If your machine frame isn’t vented properly, your electronics will start acting weird or your sockets will just burn out. The payoff When you get this right, your chipping rate plummets. Just pair the setup with a solid PID controller to keep the temperature steady. Once that’s dialed in, you’ll see way more usable pieces coming off the line and a lot less waste in the bin.
