
Why Your Patio Heater Actually Dies (And How We Fix It)
Outdoor bar heaters live a rough life. Think about it: you’ve got these high-wattage infrared elements getting screaming hot, while sitting right in the middle of rain, humidity, and wind. Most people think the heating element itself is what burns out. But usually? It’s actually the spot where the lead wire meets the quartz tube that gives up first. The “Baking” Problem Here’s the thing: a lot of heaters use cheap adhesives or basic silicone to seal those connections. In a real-world outdoor setting, those materials basically bake. They get brittle, they crack, and then the rain moves in. Once that seal is gone, moisture creeps in. That leads to oxidation, which leads to a short circuit, and suddenly your heater is a giant paperweight. When we talk about “factory-grade” sealing, we’re really just talking about using chemicals that can actually handle the heat and stick to the glass without letting go. How We Actually Build the Seal We use specialized silicone resins and fluoropolymers. Why? Because they don’t shrink or shrivel up when they hit 200°C. But the material is only half the battle. We use vacuum-sealing and compression molding to make sure there are zero air pockets. If a tiny bubble of air stays in there, it expands when it gets hot and literally pops the seal from the inside out. A tight, airtight bond is the only way to keep the electrical contacts bone-dry. A Quick Warning on Installation There is a trade-off, though. Because this seal is so strong, the lead wire becomes a bit more rigid. Don’t try to bend those wires at sharp angles when you’re installing them. If you force a tight kink right near the seal, you’re putting a ton of stress on the point where the metal meets the quartz. Just leave a little bit of a “service loop”—a small curve in the wire—so the connection can breathe. The Safety Side of Things A bad seal isn’t just a nuisance; it’s a risk. When water gets into a breached seal, it creates a path to ground. If your GFCI or RCD isn’t working perfectly, that’s a problem. Getting the sealing right stops that “leakage current” from tripping your breakers and keeps the whole unit from dying prematurely.
